Start Picniking with Open IT Online 1.4!

A new version of Open IT Online has just been published: thanks to this version, now we can edit images with Picnik, one of the most powerful online image editors. In addition to this, the new version fixes a small bug in the options dialog regarding the Google Apps url. For more details, you can see the full change log.

Open IT Online passed 500.000 downloads!!

This week Open IT Online reached 500.000 downloads from AMO website. In addition to that, I'm also happy to say that almost 100.000 users use Open IT Online every day. I want also to anticipate that a new version of Open IT Online will be published in the coming days: this new version will include the support to one of the most sophisticated online image editor. Stay tuned

Firefox for Mobile: Fennec alpha 1 is available now!

Mozilla have just released the first alpha version of Fennec: the mobile version of Firefox. At the moment Fennec can run only on Nokia N810 Internet Tablets; if you don't have such mobile, then you can always try Fennec in a Desktop environment. Fennec, even if still in alpha stage, supports:

Bookmarks, including tags

Smart URL bar ("awesome bar")

Tabbed browsing with thumbnail images

Integrated Web search - built into the URL bar

Easy access to multiple search engines

Zoom in and out

Click on a phone number to initiate a call

JavaScript API to get device location

etc.

It's difficult to say now if Fennec will win the battle against Opera Mobile, Safari Mobile and others; for sure, the possibility to develop add-ons will help Fennec as it did for Firefox.
If you are still curios, you can see a video of Fennec.

TV Manager: browse television listings while surfing the net!

Few weeks ago I've discovered a really nice Firefox extension, called TV Manager, that allows me to find quickly the answer to one of my most frequent questions: What's on TV tonight? TV Manager gathers television listings from different countries and channels and displays them in the browser sidebar in a convenient way.
At the moment, TV Manager can be installed only registering to the Mozilla Addons site: this is due to the fact that Mozilla editors didn't review it and make it public. I encourage you to write a review about TV Manageron the Mozilla site: more reviews an extension gets, more likely it becomes public.
TV Manager has been also certified 100% clean by Softpedia. It is definitely worth to give it a try!

Discover music that you'll like

Recently I've stumbled upon a cool website, Last.fm, where you can listen online to your favourite songs. The great thing is that Last.fm is able to propose other songs that you probably like. In fact, the website keeps track of the songs you listened and then it proposes some others that are similar. All that is for FREE and it works pretty well. There is also a cool Firefox extension, called Fire.fm, that allows you to play the songs directly from your status bar or toolbar. All in all, it represents a nice way to listen to your favourite music.

Open IT Online now supports Google Apps too!

A new version of Open IT Online is available (v1.3). In this version I've included the support for Google Apps: this features was requested by many users. In addition, the new version allows editing background images.

And finally a quick geek note: I've refactored all the code to use namespaces in order to avoid function and variable naming collisions with other extensions and to minimize the number of global variables (if you want to know more about this problem, you can have a look at a post written on the Yahoo User Interface blog).

Open images online thanks to Open IT Online!

On Sunday 6th April, I've released a new version of Open IT Online: my last bet into the Firefox extension world. This new version (v1.2) is a major update because it introduces the support for online image editors: yes, you understood well, now Open IT Online allows you to edit online the images you find on the net. There are already other extensions allowing to do that, but Open IT Online is different and gives to Firefox users much more freedom: they can choose which online service to use for each image type (GIF, JPG and PNG). This means, that you could decide to use a particular online editor for GIF images and another online service for PNG images.

Using the Open IT Online option dialog, it is possible to choose which online editor to use by default for each image type; in addition, when the user right clicks on a image, he has also the possibility to choose, from a list, which online editor to use.

With Open IT Online, Firefox users can edit images online having more freedom than ever. Try it out.

FOSDEM 2008: I was there!

For the first time, this year I attended to FOSDEM in Bruxelles and I must say I enjoyed a lot the time spent there. FOSDEM is the Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting, it is a 2 day event, organised by volunteers, to promote the widespread use of Free and Open Source software. Mozilla had a dedicated room to hold talks and sessions.
The Mozilla talks I've attended were extremely well done and it was exciting to meet a lot of Mozilla geeks and to meet for the first time people that I knew only thanks to their nickname.
I had the occasion to meet Massimiliano Mirra (author of SamePlace Instant Messenger), Giacomo Magnini and Gabriele Tittonel (Mozilla Italia), Ben Bucksch (independent developer), David Vismans (part of the TomTom crew), Tristan Nitot (President of Mozilla Europe), etc.

We also had the opportunity to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Mozilla: they organized a party where we had dinner and we played bowling until late in the night. It was a good way to socialize and speak about Mozilla development and other interesting ideas.

All in all, I'm very happy to have been there and to have met all these geeks.
